IMPROV GETS METATEXTUAL
COMEDY GROUP DOES SHOW ABOUT COMEDY GROUP
DOING TV SHOW ABOUT COMEDY GROUP

November 15, 2001: Kundalini Komedy, 6-year veterans of the New York City improv scene, has decided, after long and careful consideration, to sell out.

"Kundalini has had enough of the low wages and artistic freedom of legit theater," said group director Matt Kalman, "So we’ve chosen to sell out and do a television sitcom. Of course, we won’t actually be doing it on TV, because we don’t want to give up the low wages and artistic freedom we love so much. We’ll be doing our sitcom in a legit theater. A legit theater that was once a shoe store."

Each weekend from November 29 to December 15, Kundalini Komedy Sells Out (tickets still available) will feature Kundalini Komedy in a new episode of the sitcom Kundalini Komedy: The Sitcom, a sitcom about an improv group called Kundalini Komedy.

"It’s just like Seinfeld," enthused producer Jonathan Van Gieson, "except, instead of being about one comedian, it will be about a whole improv group. And, instead of being a show about nothing, the show will be about something. Also, instead of being on prime-time TV, this show will be in an abandoned shoe store. And OUR show will not feature Jerry Seinfeld’s trademark brand of humor; rather, it will feature Kundalini Komedy’s trademark brand of humor. So, aside from being unlike Seinfeld in almost every significant way, this show is exactly like Seinfeld."

The fictitious group "Kundalini Komedy" featured in the sitcom (played by the real-life Kundalini Komedy,) is led by Matt — who makes his money dressing up as cartoon characters for children’s parties — and includes intense method actor Ean, the bitter and misanthropic Christina, Alex, a harried and neurotic temp, Lesley, the voice of experience, the suave and outgoing Bones, who runs the sci-fi porn site SexTrek, and sweet, naive Laura, who joins the group in episode 2 — with hilarious results.

Episode One: The Show Must Go runs Thursday, Friday, and Saturday November 29 through December 1. If the episode were listed in TV Guide, the listing would read; "Series Premiere: It's half an hour until showtime, but no one can get to the theater. Will the improv start on time? (TV-14)" The half-hour sitcom will be followed by 30 minutes of improv, for a total running time of 1 hour.
