KUNDALINI REVAMPS SHOW
IN STANDARD SECOND-EPISODE RETOOLING,
KUNDALINI KOMEDY ADDS CAST MEMBER TO SITCOM
November 26, 2001: Kundalini Komedy Sells Out (tickets still available) -- Although the pilot episode of Kundalini Komedy: The Sitcom does not premiere until this Thursday at 8pm, the producers have begun "retooling" the show in anticipation of viewer reaction. Only six cast members appear as regulars in the pilot, entitled "The Show Must Go." In addition to the Thursday 8pm time slot, the episode will have an encore presentation at 8pm on Friday, November 30, and a repeat at 8pm on Saturday, December 1.
"I had made some suggestions for changes that I thought would really sell the show," said producer Jonathan Van Gieson, "but the director and cast rejected them offhand. I don't mind saying I'm a bit upset."
"Lets just say that some of Jons ideas were a bit
well, untenable is a friendly word for it," said director Matt Kalman, "I mean, for instance, were doing a live theatrical performance. How in the hell can we make it animated?"
"My ideas were real winners, too," added Van Gieson, "picture this: an improv group
in space
fighting crime. It's like Enterprise meets Smallville meets The Carol Burnett Show. Perfect, right? Right?"
In the end, a compromise was reached: Add a member to the fictitious improv group "Kundalini Komedy" (portrayed by real-life improv group Kundalini Komedy). In the first episode, the group is led by Matt who makes his money dressing up as cartoon characters for childrens parties and includes intense method actor Ean, the bitter and misanthropic Christina, Alex, a harried and neurotic temp, Lesley, the voice of experience, and the suave and outgoing Bones, who runs the sci-fi porn site SexTrek. In the second episode, "Laura" (newcomer Laura Valpey) rounds out the cast as a sweet, innocent, young woman who is fresh-out-of-college and has no idea of her effect on the guys in the group.
"I have to admit, it works great," Van Gieson had to admit, "though I still think my suggestion to set the show in a bar in an underwater airport would have worked. Cheers meets The Little Mermaid meets Wings. Perfect, right? Right? Right?"
If the sitcom were listed in TV Guide, the pilot episode's listing would read; "Series Premiere: The Show Must Go It's half an hour until showtime, but no one can get to the theater. Will the improv start on time? (TV-14)". The second episode's listing would read "Episode 2: Attack of the Hormones: A new member joins the group, which spells trouble for the guys! (TV-14)".
